Where am I? How did I get here?
The high noon sun beats down on me as I suddenly regain consciousness. How long had I been out? It was difficult to tell. I roll my right sleeve up and take a look at my arm. I had been suffering from blackouts for a few years now so I developed a system that helps marginally. Whenever I eat a meal, I put a mark on my right arm. Before I go to sleep I clean them all off. Since the blackouts happen randomly and render me unsure of how much time has passed, this only helps a little. Furthermore, over the years I’ve become very good at getting my bearings.
OK, I look around. I’m in the parking lot of the Country Mart and I’m facing the West Plains Country Club. I have a bag of groceries in my left hand; they must be my groceries. I’m standing next to a car with the driver’s door open, but this doesn’t look like my car.
“Stop him! Get that guy! He stole my groceries!” I hear someone cry out from somewhat far away. These are not my groceries. The best option right now looks to be getting in the car and driving away, so I do just that.
Sweat drips down my face and neck as I fly down the Jan Howard Expressway and take a right on Gibson. I briefly contemplate stopping at the Wendy’s, but ultimately decide I have more important things to do. Eventually I find my way to Independence Drive when the phone in the passenger seat starts ringing. It’s a Samsung Galaxy S Advance I9070 Android Phone.
“Hello?” I say as I put the phone to my ear.
“It’s John. Get to Buck Park,” a man says before hanging up.
I knew the place. A quick left on St. Louis put me within minutes of it. I pull into the park and remain in the car to scope the place out. As I said, I knew the park. What I don’t know is this John. I don’t know any Johns. I get startled by a knock on the window.
“Get out of the car,” he says sternly. I oblige.
“How do you know who I am?” I ask him.
“I don’t! You stole my car! And my phone! And my groceries!”
