It was the treasure I was after for years.
Those that do not know me would never expect that I was an avid treasure hunter. I never talk about it unless directly asked and how often does the subject of treasure hunting come up? Not often. The only other direct question that could give someone insight to my hobby would be, “Where do you keep going in the middle of the night?”
You see, I don't have time to be a full-time treasure hunter. My big problem in that respect is that I've never found any treasure. Due to that, I need a job that pays the bills and that only leaves nighttime to carrying out my treasure hunting fantasies. I stopped sleeping a few years back because it gave me more time during the day to do stuff. People have told me it’s a bad idea, but I don't see why. I haven't had so much as a wink of sleep in 5 years and I feel just fine. It starts out hard but it gets easier as you go along, trust me. After a week you start getting mild hallucinations, but you learn to deal with them. Later, actually, it becomes kind of fun. I've had wildly entertaining conversations with my boss only to realize I was talking to a water cooler the entire time!
So instead of sleeping I take my rowboat out to the lake and treasure dive for phones. I love phones more than anything. Never found one though. Not even one. Some of the people that know about my hobby have told me that you wouldn't find phones in the lake I dive in.
“Oh really?” I would ask. “How many times have you gone treasure diving in that lake?”
The answer is always never. I'm the one that knows. And while it would seem that my failed attempts are evidence that phones do not exist in that lake, I like to think of it as evidence that I have to try harder. So try harder I always do. I dive for longer, search wider and still find nothing. I was nearly at the brink of my own sanity when one day my outstretched hand wrapped its fingers around a rectangular object. I got a firm grip on the object and swam back up to my boat.
I gasped for breath as I reached the surface just in time. With my left hand raised up to grab the side of the boat and hoist myself in, I took a glance at my right hand clutching the exact item I had been wanting for so long: The HTC One X Android Smartphone! I was finally triumphant! Everything in my life was now allowed to change because I met my goal. It took years longer than I expected, I will admit, but none of that matters now. It's over. It's finally over. I'm going to sleep!
