Who is that in the back?
Despite harboring a deep love for my film camera, it was becoming increasingly inconvenient to buy and develop film, not to mention expensive. Eventually this got to me and I sprung for a digital camera, entering into the future most people entered quite some time ago. Since I like displaying my photographs all over the house, I also purchased the HP 10.4” Digital Picture Frame.
I didn’t notice it at first, but a friend pointed out a strange anomaly in one of my pictures.
“Who is that in the back of this one?” she asked me.
“What?” I asked in response, walking over to the picture frame.
On closer inspection, I noticed that in the picture of my friends and I standing together on a pier there was a strange man I did not recognize in the back; he was the only one in the picture not smiling. Having taken the shot not too long ago, I distinctly remember no one else being on that pier with us.
As time went on, I started to notice the man in other pictures, still keeping the same clothes and expression. Furthermore, the audio playback on the device started spontaneously blasting the main theme from Close Encounters of the Third Kind and abruptly shutting off anytime I tried to turn it off myself. After a few weeks, this became alarming.
“What do you want from me?” I shouted at the picture frame after finally losing my nerves.
“… your soul,” said a voice from inside the frame. I was horrified and took a few steps backwards.
“… really?”
“Nah!”
