Temperatures had dropped below 10° and I was ill prepared for the weather. As work finished for the day, I head out the door to freeze my way to the bus stop. My teeth chatter and I can barely concentrate on anything … it’s all reduced to simple instruction: left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot.

I approach the street on which I will take a right and see my worst fear, at least of the moment: the bus flies by with a thunderous roll, clanging on its loose suspension while driving over uneven pavement. Immediately, I knew what to do.

My hand reaches into my pocket and unveils the Philips Pocket-Sized Portable Speaker. Through it I play Chariots of Fire and sprint after the bus as quickly as my feet will carry me. I am weightless. It’s a deep navy blue, not quite day but not yet night. Then, the sharp pain of the sidewalk hits all over my body. I hear the bus doors closing, followed by the shot of the exhaust propelling my ride forward and away. I have failed.
